Alex De Pase Interview in Tattoo Artist Magazine # 33 Interview Preview

Exerpt from Tattoo Artist Magazine #33

AlexDePase (26)-1
(Interview by Jeff Gogué)

Jeff Gogué: So you started the Worldwide Tattoo Conference. Can you explain what that is?

Alex de Pase: When I thought about the Worldwide Tattoo Conference, I thought about what’s really needed in the tattoo industry. There are many kinds of conventions but I would like to something where you could exchange experiences and exchange knowledge with the best tattoo artists in my opinion. I think when you tell your story people can understand much more than they can by just watching you work. That’s why I thought about the Worldwide Tattoo Conference being different from the normal seminars. I wanted to bring the artists together and have the audience listen to them. In this way you can exchange more ideas and you can have more input. When I saw the feedback of the people who went to Chicago or Rome it made me very proud and very happy. My hair stood up like this because these people really kept what I had in mind before I started the Worldwide Tattoo Conference…

I’ve tattooed for 13 years and I think my second year I started taking seminars, because I also had no help. Well, very little help – I found a couple friends like Cory Norris – he helped me. I would get tattooed and he would answer my questions – he was nice. That helped me a lot and I saw a role model in him. I saw an example in him of someone who had integrity and they wanted to do it right.

AlexDePaseAlexDePase (47)

You were lucky because my example was an asshole! (Laughs) You had Cory Norris.

I do feel very lucky. I thought, “I want to be like this guy.” I knew that he had mentors. He had somewhat of an apprenticeship but more a group of experienced tattooers that held him accountable to do things well, to do things right and to treat people with respect in the right way. So I started taking seminars. I knew there must be seminars out there so I’d go to conventions and there were. I took some seminars – maybe ten over a couple years – and at every one I felt like I didn’t learn very much. I felt like it was a waste of money and a waste of time. It made me angry because I needed more.

AlexDePase (17)AlexDePase (6)

From then on I felt like I wanted to get good enough so that I can try to do a better job. Not arrogance, not in a prideful way, but I didn’t want other people to have the same struggles I had, which I think are the same as yours. Long story short, after doing seminars I worked years and years trying to gain the credibility, trying to promote my name and get known and respected enough that somebody might want to listen. Putting together information that I think would have helped me earlier. I started the seminars and they’ve gone great. It’s really just one seminar I’ve done this whole time – five or six years of telling my story. It’s evolved, it’s changed – I’ve found the things that are more important to talk about and the things that are less important. All that to say that the Worldwide Tattoo Conference has been the best experience for me. I’ve seen the most response from it and I think that it’s just a great, amazing idea and concept and I’m very grateful to be a part of it.

AlexDePase (29)AlexDePase (12)AlexDePase (21)

Thank you. I love you Jeff. (Laughs)

I guess this question has been answered – I was going to ask what you hoped to accomplish by helping other people with things like the Worldwide Tattoo Conference.

This is a strange question because I probably have no answer to it. The only thing I can say is that it makes me proud and happy. When I saw people in Chicago giving a standing ovation it was amazing for me. For me, for you, and I think for all the guys there.

Yeah, it was moving – powerful.

The project WWTC (WorldWideTattooConference) was conceived in 2011. The original idea was to get together different talented tattoists in an itinerant multicultural context who would travel around the world, stopping over in significant European and American spots to share and offer their expertise and personal views of their work to the global tattoo community.
The project came to life in October 2011, when the first WWTC was held in Rome. The artists involved were: Nick Baxter, Jeff Gogue, Alex De Pase and Boris, sided by the tattoo marketing expert Gabe Ripley. It was a great success and attendees were enthusiastic about the experience they had had the opportunity to share.
Then it was the turn of Chicago in April 2012 with Nick Baxter, Bob Tyrrell, Jeff Gogue, Boris, Guy Aitchison and Alex De Pase and its WWTC was even more successful than Rome: 250 guests rallied from all over the world to assist at the best tattoo seminars ever put together in recent times. The WWTC project was just the right stuff and it had to go on….
Its last edition took place in September 2012 at the Tobacco Dock in London, just before the 8th International London Tattoo Convention took off. This time the venue was different: the WWTC was hosted by a Tattoo Convention, in the same rooms that would have been crammed with astonishing tattoists a couple of days later. The London WWTC was rougher and wilder, but the most positive expectations were met for the third time. Lots of European young tattoo artists flocked to the Tobacco Dock buildings and were impressed by the sense of cohesion and belonging to a global community of people who want to share their knowledge without any barrier and where limits or dishomogeneous levels do not exist. The masters Bob Tyrell, Joe Capobianco, Boris, Nikko Hurtado, Stephane Chaudesaigues and Alex De Pase and the apprentices are just members of the same family and everybody is there to take their turn.

With updated and some brand new seminars, Guy Aitchison, Nick Baxter, Jeff Gogue, Alex De Pase, Bob Tyrrell, and Nikko Hurtado will all be teaching new or updated seminars.

Check out this review from last years Chicago show from Tattoo Artist Magazine:

By Crash

Some may recall my enthusiastic blog report last fall on the Paradise Tattoo Gathering Well, I’m gonna do it again! The World Wide Tattoo Conference, brainchild of Italian tattoo artist Alex De Pase and co-hosted by Gabe Ripley and TattooNOW.com, is a new first in the tattoo world; a two-day seminar event for professional tattooers, boasting lectures from six highly respected and influential global artists. More than 200 tattoo artists from around the globe travelled to St. Charles, Illinois to attend this specialized tattoo conference…

It’s difficult to describe to members of our community just how profoundly different an environment it is to be surrounded by nothing but enthusiastic tattooers eager to learn, grow and (eventually) make meaningful contributions of their own to the legacy of our sacred craft. It was a transformative experience for all involved, attendee and presenter alike.

>

On the first day, registration lines were already forming at 8:30 a.m. for the 10 a.m. start time. Even more amazing is the fact that they were there with smiles on their faces: no griping, no whining, nothing but pure excitement to be in attendance. The 10 a.m. lecture was by the WWTC’s creator (Alex De Pase) who (with the help of an interpreter) covered some of the basics of drawing and tattooing the human facial structures. This was followed by a short lunch break and another two-hour presentation (this one by fan-favorite Bob Tyrrell) on his techniques for black and gray portrait work.
